LIFESAVER water filtration technology arrives in Vila Canoas, Brazil. Made possible, by local NGO - Para Ti
Para Ti - a Brazilian based NGO, situated in the Rio de Janiero favela of Vila Canoas was established in the 1980's by Italian Franco Urani, a former president of Fiat Brazil in the 1970's, and his wife Giuliana.
In August 2015, Stuart from LIFESAVER systems met the Para Ti team within their community centre in Vila Canoas which is one of Rio Janiero's favelas, home to nearly 3,000 residents situated just 500 metres from the Ipanema beach and only half a mile from the largest and most infamous favela in Brazil - Rocinha, home to close to 400,000 residents.
Para Ti has funded hundreds of projects from day care, after-school centres, to sewerage, housing projects and a creche. LIFESAVER systems was fortunate enough to meet with young school children during a Para Ti after-school club and distributed some LIFESAVER water filtration bottles to the group. The Para Ti group represents on a small scale the issue that both Vila Canoas face as well as other larger favelas in Rio de Janeiro. And that is the issue of residents gaining access to a regular supply of clean, safe drinking water. The Para Ti group in particular do not drink from the dripping water pipe which feeds into the centre, opting to instead purchase plastic bottles of water at a typical cost of $4 for 6 litres. This represents both a costly and unsustainable solution.
The purpose of distributing LIFESAVER water bottles was to provide this small group with a means to produce their own clean water from any ground source, demonstrating that their is an alternative to bottled water and an unsafe mains supply. The use of LIFESAVER bottles in the Vila Canoas favela is on-going and LIFESAVER look forward to receiving feedback from the Para Ti team on the uptake of the technology, and the benefits provided.
LIFESAVER systems visited NGO, Para Ti and Vila Canoas ahead of the Fitabes Rio Water Show, held October 4th - 8th 2015, organised by the Brazilian Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering: www.events.ukti.gov.uk/water-mission-to-brazil---fitabes-rio-water-show-6/
