Clean water for remote communities
LIFESAVER systems' transformative clean water technology has been bought to life in Central Java, Indonesia, pioneered on the ground by the Indonesian Movement of Health Drinking Water/ Gerakan Air Minum Sehat Indonesia (GAMSI). This is the first time a project of this kind has been launched in this area with the goal of providing the poorest, remotest communities with access to clean, safe drinking water.
The project is focused on providing the people of the Bakalrejo village in the Susukan district, Semarang with a guaranteed supply of clean drinking water which does not rely on conventional infrastructure such as power or ongoing maintainence in order for it to operate. The project partner (GAMSI) selected LIFESAVER systems technology for their augural project due to the suitability of LIFESAVER technology in filling the gap left by the lack of traditional infrastructure, whereby clean water free from viruses and bacteria can be provided instantly without running costs.
Striving to meet a 2019 Post Millennium Development goal
GAMSI’s wider objective initiated through the Bakalrejo project is to set about practically achieving a 2019 Post Millennium Development goal which is to not only provide people with clean drinking water but also help reduce waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, a goal which in part can be achieved through community education about clean water and its importance on people’s health, the impact of which can be felt in years to come as communities reap benefits such as improved standards of living and economic gains.
As the founder of GAMSI, Antonius Soelistyo states: "It takes a lot of time and a large budget to solve these [water] problems. Infrastructure development that is not evenly distributed as well as the fact that not many people understand and are not concerned enough about drinking water quality are only some of the difficulties that advocates face".
Antonius Soelistyo, views the Bakalrejo project as just the beginning as he plans to roll out further clean water programmes across Indonesia. LIFESAVER systems will continue to follow their story as they successfully work to lift remote communities out of water poverty.
